Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is performing a bit of a coup by announcing that all its ships will meet the United Nations’ “Zero Impact” standard by April 1, 2022, a big step toward cleaner power generation. The “Zero Impact” standard means that all ships will be powered by wind and solar energy, and use fuel cells as an auxiliary source of electricity.
If you plan to cruise this year, you may have noticed that Norwegian’s ships are becoming ever more popular on the high seas. The cruise line announced this week that all Norwegian-owned ships will be sailing by April 2022.
While the world has spoken out about Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) alleged mistreatment of its employees, the cruise company’s non-union workforce has faced its own set of concerns. In May 2018, the Norwegian Labor Board ruled in favor of the crew on a number of issues, including the need for better health insurance for crew members and the need for pay raises.. By April 1, 2022, the whole fleet will be back.
It’s that time of year when cruise lines, notably Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and its three cruise brands, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, release their annual reports.
The good news is that things are looking better, particularly now that Norwegian Jade has resumed operations for the first time in over 500 days! On July 25, the ship set sail from Piraeus, Greece, with passengers on board. It symbolizes the business’s triumphant return, which the company has chronicled in its EMBARK video series.
“With the successful launch of our relaunch with the first ship in our fleet, Norwegian Jade, cruising the Greek Isles last week, we achieved a historic milestone in our Great Cruise Comeback. Norwegian Encore will take sail from Seattle to Alaska tomorrow, marking our first voyage in the United States in over 500 days,” said Frank Del Rio, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.
“As we resume operations, we are putting health and safety first with our comprehensive, science-backed SailSAFETM health and safety program, which includes our 100 percent immunization policy that applies to all trips on our three brands,” Del Rio added. We’re excited to welcome passengers back aboard, and our booking trends for future voyages continue to be very strong. To capitalize on this unprecedented pent-up demand, our team is working hard to implement our plan to restore our entire fleet to service by April 2022.”

By April 1, 2022, all 28 cruise ships from the three brands are anticipated to be back on the water. By the end of the year, 75 percent of the fleet should be operational. The number of restarts will go up in August, with Norwegian Encore being the first ship in the fleet to restart in the United States. On July 6, 2021, the ship will resume Alaskan sailings from Seattle, Washington. Norwegian Gem will begin sailings from Miami, Florida on August 15.

The Fight With Florida Isn’t Over
Despite the fact that the cruise company intends to resume operations from Florida, the state’s vaccination passport restriction remains in place. The cruise line has been unable to reach an agreement with the authorities on the need of evidence of vaccination from passengers. NCLH petitioned the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida in June to declare Florida’s ban unconstitutional and to provide a preliminary injunction allowing the Company to continue sailing in the safest manner possible.

With the development of new variations and other cruise companies raising their standards in recent days, it’s more essential than ever to ensure that passengers are completely vaccinated. Norwegian Cruise Line will have more clarity on its route to resume cruises from Florida after a hearing on its request for a preliminary injunction on August 6.
With every vessel, the business keeps things easy by providing fully immunized passengers and staff.
Bookings are looking promising.
On the booking front, things are starting to look up. Despite less promotion, reservations in 2022 seem to be higher than in 2019. This includes reservations made using Future Cruise Credit as a result of prior cancellations. As of June 30, 2021, ticket sales totaled $1.4 billion.
