Amazon Air is ready to compete overnight with FedEx, UPS
Gary Leff is 24 years old. February 2021.
In 2019, I told you that Amazon would offer consumers a stand-alone alternative to UPS and FedEx, which has been delayed due to a glut of coronavirus orders – Amazon has been using all of its air cargo delivery capabilities to deliver its own packages.
However, it now looks like they are about to set up a transport network for third-party packages. And from what we’ve seen on Amazon so far, that makes sense. For example, Amazon initially built up its servers to handle the huge spike in orders during the Christmas holidays and found that it had spare server capacity for the rest of the year – and huge server management capabilities. They have therefore expanded into the neighboring cloud computing space (Amazon Web Services).
They have now set up supply and logistics capacity to manage their own congestion, which has given them tons of extra capacity. Amazon alone delivers more packages than other transportation services combined. Even before the pandemic, the company shipped more than 3.5 billion packages a year, making its domestic shipping business two-thirds larger than UPS’s.
In Los Angeles and London, they have already tested a cheaper and more convenient competitor for overnight delivery services. And they’re approaching critical mass,
With the cargo planes that Amazon is adding to its own fleet by the end of spring, the number of flights will increase to 160 per day, nearly double the number of flights in May.
This expansion will allow Amazon Air to push ahead with its plans for standard next-day parcel delivery in North America, and the company is approaching critical mass for third-party parcels.
Appropriations : Amazon
It wasn’t until 2016 that the very first Prime Air 767 received its livery. If your airline is withdrawing its 767s, it’s probably because of Amazon’s request.
The Amazon seems to thrive in a world of atoms, not pieces. Cargo, by the way, this deregulation of the airlines, which everyone agrees has worked.
