The newest living ship of recent years, the MV Narrative, was built by Brodosplit in Croatia. The ship will be the most environmentally friendly in the world, according to Storylines, the company behind the new construction.
Not only will the ship have an unusual appearance and run on liquefied natural gas, but it will also have a garden to grow fresh produce, energy converters to turn waste into energy, and fuel cells to power the ship’s living quarters.
The homes range in size from 237 to 2,411 square feet and cost from $300,000 to more than $8 million.
Storylines
Storylines is a newcomer to the cruise market and does not present itself specifically as a cruise line. According to the company, the ship will be an all-inclusive ocean getaway that will attract adventurers looking to immerse themselves in world culture.

While most cruise lines spend one and at most two or three days in each port of call, Storylines aims for the MV Narrative to spend three to five days in each port.
Guests who choose to stay on board are offered a wide range of activities, including enrichment programs, spa services with a local touch, and a culinary atrium featuring local cuisine inspired by each port of call.

The route is not only being developed by Storylines, but residents also have a say in it. The company has included a resident of your choice in each itinerary. Customers who buy a stay can choose in which port they want the ship to call. So although the route is somewhat fixed, there are a fair number of options.

Greenest ship at sea
Storylines is promoting the MV Narrative as the greenest ship at sea. While many companies have experienced this in recent years, it’s easy to see that Storylines has taken the concept to a whole new level.

While this is generally not necessarily true of cruise ships, which are an extremely polluting and wasteful vacation option, the MV Narrative, which runs on liquefied natural gas, offers several energy and resource efficient options that others can certainly learn from:
- A 5,400 square foot vertical organic hydroponic garden with crops such as lettuce, microgreens, herbs and vines.
- Use of fuel cells to power the ship’s apartments.
- Zero Farmers Market with organic produce from the ship’s garden, freshly prepared meats, bulk goods and gas stations for basic necessities.
- The animal products come from free-range farms and not from factory farms.
- An 800 litre microbrewery for self-sufficiency on board, serving exceptionally fresh, high quality beer and meeting waste reduction targets.
- Selecting wines on the barrel conveyor saves 25 cases and 300 glass bottles per 60 gallon barrel.
The MV Narrative is being built at the same shipyard that specializes in the expedition cruise market, of which three have been built in recent years. The shipyard also built the world’s largest sailing ship, the Golden Horizon.

The ship will have at least three pools, and there will be more than 450 crew members on board to care for guests living in 627 accommodations. The vessel will be 230 metres long and have a total tonnage of 62,000 gross tons.
