The country of Croatia has been steadily opening its borders with the European Union, but as the political crisis in the Mediterranean continues to unfold, the prospects of tourism might not be all that bright in the years to come.
There are more than seven million Croatians living outside their home country, a number that’s been growing steadily. Croatia has seen a consistent decline in its citizens’ emigration rates over recent years and is now the country with the lowest level of emigration, too. With a population of just over four million, the potential for tourism in Croatia is huge.
The Republic of Croatia is a small European country in Central Europe, situated between Austria, Hungary and Serbia. The country has a lot going for it, and in fact is one of the most popular places for tourists in the world. However, despite the fact that more than a million people visit Croatia every year, Croatia is not very well known in the Western world.
The summer season is upon us and a popular European destination, which has been facing travel restrictions and closures for over a year due to the pandemic, could not be better prepared to welcome foreign tourists. Croatia is a culturally rich destination, located at the confluence of Central and South-Eastern Europe, and is heavily dependent on income from international tourism, which usually represents about 20% of annual GDP. The most popular towns along the country’s beautiful Adriatic coast, such as the picturesque medieval walled city of Dubrovnik or Rovinj with its quaint cobbled streets and pebble beaches, live almost entirely on tourist money. ADVERTISEMENT Current trend According to an Associated Press report, the mood among tourism workers is positive as they reopen resorts in the region and prepare beach chairs, open beach bars and restore restaurants and hotels to full operation. In fact, Croatia has already largely reopened areas along its scenic Adriatic coast to foreign tourists, making it one of the first European countries to lift most COVID-19 measures. The Balkan country was also one of the first countries to lift travel restrictions on fully vaccinated foreign travelers in early April. Croatia admits tourists from most European countries, as well as from the United States and other non-EU countries, who hold a vaccination certificate, arrive with a negative test for COVID-19 or have recovered from a confirmed case of the virus within the past six months. Although the country’s policy permits and encourages the arrival of foreign tourists this summer, the actual number of visitors this year will depend largely on the regulations in the travelers’ countries of origin. Fortunately, the incidence is falling in Croatia, and although vaccination has been slow to take off in the country, it is gaining ground. About 80,000 workers in the country’s tourism sector are receiving the COVID-19 vaccine as a priority, and authorities estimate that about half of Croatia’s four million residents will be fully vaccinated by mid-summer. Tourism Minister Nicolina Brnjac said the ministry would install several PCR testing stations to make it easier for foreign travelers to undergo the tests they need to return home. It is our duty to provide all the conditions necessary to travel safely and comfortably and to allow for predictable vacation planning, she said in a recent webinar. In this sense, Croatia is one of the first, if not the first, European destination that already applies broader criteria for tourist travel, the same as those that will soon be applied in the EU. Croatian tourism officials expect an influx of American tourists this summer, especially after the start of non-stop flights from New York to Dubrovnik in early July. The country of Croatia is a beautiful destination for travel enthusiasts, but not many have managed to visit this Balkan country.
