Ako City is a great place to stay on the way from Himeji to Hiroshima. Visitors can relax in traditional hotels called ontsen and stroll through the streets of Setonai Kai (Seto Inland Sea).

The city is known for several Japanese heritage sites, including the Ako City History Museum, Ako Castle Ruins, Seaside Park, Ako Marine Science Museum and Shio no Kuni.

A visit to the history museum, which offers the traveller an introduction to the region, is definitely worthwhile. The museum has four permanent exhibitions that tell the story of Sola Ako, Ako Castle and Castle City, the history of 47 Ronin and Water Works.

Travelers to this city can also visit the ruins of Ako Castle, a historic site with beautiful gardens that is also recognized as a place of scenic beauty in Japan.

The castle has 12 gates and 10 jaguars or towers. During the Meiji Restoration, parts of the castle were rebuilt, but after World War II, several buildings were rebuilt.

Visitors, especially families, will love stopping by Seaside Park, where they’ll find WakuWaku Land, a theme park with rides and activities for kids.

There is also a large lake in the middle of the park with snack bars and rowing boats for hire. Animal Friendly Village is a petting zoo that is also located in the park.

Ako is famous for its salt, which visitors can see when they visit the historical museum. If you want to see how salt flavors fit into local cuisine, stop by Ako Ramen Menbu, where you can try shio ramen made with ako salt.
