Britain’s coastal waters could be overcrowded this summer as cruise lines look to take advantage of loosening travel restrictions.
After Princess Cruises, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Hurtigruten and others, MSC Cruises is the latest to offer water testing. Like the others, MSC’s cruises will be open to UK residents only, but with one notable difference: vaccination will not be mandatory.
The MSC program begins on the 20th. May with a series of short cruises from Southampton, followed later in the season by seven overnight trips.
It’s time for UK holidaymakers to get back on board and enjoy a well-earned break after what has been, in many ways, a very challenging year, said Antonio Paradiso, Managing Director of MSC Cruises UK & Ireland.
MSC does not require vaccination for UK cruise ships
We hope to offer all types of holidaymakers the chance to get away this summer – from grandparents to teenagers and younger passengers exploring. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated guests are welcome.
Paradiso said many health and safety protocols will be implemented to ensure safe swimming, even without the need for vaccinations.
All guests are screened before boarding. Non-vaccinated persons must also present proof of a negative test result obtained within 72 hours prior to boarding. Crew will be tested weekly, in addition to a protocol test and a 14-day pre-departure quarantine, among other ongoing health monitoring measures.
More information about the program will be announced in the coming days.

Princess: Mandatory vaccination and contactless technology
Meanwhile, Princess Cruises has released more details about its UK summer vacation series. According to the line, due to the advanced state of vaccination in the UK, travel on Regal Princess and Sky Princess will be limited to guests who have been vaccinated by COVID and are UK residents.
The Regal Princess will offer 14 flights to the UK from July 31 to September 23, while the Sky Princess will offer from 30. August to the 28th. Eight flights to the UK will be offered in September.
The ships will offer both round trips and voyages with UK ports of call such as Liverpool, Belfast and Greenock, with itineraries ranging from three to seven nights.
At Princess Cruises, the ship is also a destination, says Tony Roberts, vice president of Princess Cruises for the United Kingdom and Europe. Guests can enjoy our many dining options, order poolside food and drinks that can be delivered to you with the MedallionClass app, and enjoy fantastic entertainment day and night.
Both Princess ships sailing in this region are of the Medallion class, which means guests will use a wearable device that enables touchless embarkation and disembarkation, keyless cabin access, touchless commerce, simplified security training and entertainment content via smart devices.
