The CDC recommends using a “high-quality” mask with a “filtering” ability when you are around people who are sick, but you can also be vaccinated. The CDC recommends that you don’t share a mask if you have been vaccinated with any strain of the flu, because they diverge from each other. So, should you take your mask off and put a mask on for each person you see?
Many cruise ships offer vaccinations for those who wish to travel, and as a result, some cruisers can become quite sick when they disembark. An article in the New York Times recently suggested that some cruisers were taking advantage of the vaccinations by wearing no masks or covering their face, which could spread disease into the general population.
When we cruised to Alaska last spring, we were advised to get our vaccinations (the CDC recommends everyone get vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Meningitis, and Typhoid) before the trip, as the Canadian Arctic is a high risk area for these diseases.. What’s the catch? These rules apply to ships where at least 95% of the passengers have been vaccinated.
What the new manual says
Every day we get a better idea of what cruising will be like in the age of social distancing. And to perfectly vaccinated passengers, this can seem almost normal….. to the point where social distancing would not be necessary. The latest update to this process, the CDC’s Conditional Navigation Order, states that ships with 98% of the crew and 95% of the passengers fully vaccinated will be subject to far fewer restrictions than could have been imagined a few days ago. The CDC has previously stated that fully vaccinated people can participate in various outdoor activities without a mask. However, the latest update suggests that ships may, at their discretion, designate areas accessible only to fully vaccinated passengers and crew, where masks and physical separation are not required. Examples of such venues include casinos, bars, spas, entertainment venues, and eateries ….. including self-service buffets. Most airlines already have plans to switch from self-service to crew service, but under the new guidelines, passengers will also be able to get self-service. This also means that non-vaccinated passengers will not have access to these designated areas. This is important to know, because in theory cruise lines can require their passengers to be vaccinated, but they can make exceptions in certain circumstances – as long as they stay within the required percentage. Unvaccinated passengers allowed on board should note that some of the most popular areas of the ship will be closed to them. READ MORE: What you should know about cruise travel insurance
Social distancing may be limited
In addition, the guidelines indicate that vessels operating with the required percentage of vaccinated crew and guests may, again at their discretion, inform passengers and crew that they do not need to wear a mask or maintain a physical distance in any area. In addition, many of the requirements to be complied with on ships with a vaccination coverage of less than 95% will become recommendations under the new directive. These include limiting the number of people in the elevator at any one time, limiting the capacity of showrooms, and using social distance techniques in casinos (e.g., marking every other seat to create additional space). The recent changes seem to indicate a general loosening of shore restrictions, echoing a request that cruise lines have been making for months to adhere to essentially the same standards. It’s also a well-known fact that the more people that are immunized, the more likely it is that people will catch the diseases, since they are passing it around. It’s only a matter of time before someone comes along and says, “Why not do the opposite?” In other words, why not protect yourself by avoiding contact with people who have been vaccinated, or with those who have gone through the process of getting vaccinated? That question was posed to me by a friend of mine, and I decided to try it out. My goal was to visit a country where measles is uncommon.
