Many thought it would never happen. However, a late summer Alaska cruise season is looking increasingly likely. The latest development is the signing of an agreement between Norwegian Cruise Line and several state port operators. The Norwegian Bliss at Ketchikan, Alaska (Photo courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line) According to new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all cruise lines wishing to sail from U.S. ports beginning in 2021 must enter into agreements with the ports outlining safety procedures to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks and the actions to be taken in the event of an outbreak. The CCD must approve the plan before the ships can set sail. Norwegian plans to deploy the Norwegian Bliss on seven-day round-trip flights from Seattle, departing August 7 and continuing through August 16. October. The ship visits Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point, Alaska. The agreement will allow a Norwegian vessel to navigate the Southeast Alaska Highway once a week. Although Norwegian Cruise Line has agreed to use the Bliss, the contract lists four potential ships, giving it some leeway. Norwegian, for its part, has agreed to resume service with fully vaccinated guests and crew. The CDC’s recently updated rules allow vaccinated cruise passengers to explore cruise ports on their own and choose both cruise line and independent excursions. The agreement also outlines the cruise line’s plan of action in case cases of COVID-19 occur on board, which the cruise line says is unlikely thanks to mandatory vaccination. However, there have been cases of breakouts in vaccinated adults, and Norway’s plan is to quarantine infected guests and their closest contacts in special cabins. This week Norwegian Cruise Line announced an agreement with Norwegian construction partner Oucean1 that will allow NCL to begin planning for its first independent Alaska Cruise, a year ahead of its 2020 2020 timetable…..
