Soak in the Northern Summer Splendor Aboard Alaska Railroad

It looks like cruises to Alaska will not be possible this summer, as Canada has banned large cruise ships from sailing in its waters until June 28. February 2022 banned. But if you travel on the Alaska Railroad, you can still experience the splendor of Alaska’s summer landscape firsthand.

Whether it’s a day trip or part of your journey, or you’re taking advantage of a full summer package to see the many wonders of the state by train, the Alaska Railroad has options to fit your warm weather Alaska travel plans. Trains operate year-round with regular passenger service between Southcentral and Interior Alaska, with seasonal routes taking visitors to some of Alaska’s most popular destinations and events.


The Coastal Classic Train will run from the 29th. From May to 6. September 2021: daily from Anchorage to Girdwood and then to Seward. At the same time, Denali Star Train trains run northbound or southbound between Anchorage and Fairbanks, depending on the day, with stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna, Hurricane Junction and Denali.

As in the past, the Alaska Railroad is partnering with local businesses to offer several summer tour packages that give customers the chance to explore the entire railroad route on a larger scale.


Popular options include a seven-day Alaska National Parks train trip, which takes you to both Denali National Park and Preserve and Kenai Fjords National Park. Along the way you can see land and sea creatures, raft, fly and swim among icebergs, and spot sea otters, sea lions and maybe even whales.

The 11-night Glaciers, Rails and Trails trip takes you on a wilderness cruise in Kenai Fjords National Park, a glacier cruise on the river, a jet boat tour in Wild River National Park and a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, overnight stays in the backcountry of Denali National Park and a remote wildlife lodge, and much more.

There are a total of 11 summer packages, ranging from four to eleven nights. No matter what area you are interested in, from wildlife viewing to park exploration to active adventure, the Alaska Railroad has an itinerary or package to fit your needs.
