Enjoy a day at the beach

If you want to spend a relaxing day at the beach, East Beach is the place for you. Also known as St. John’s. Simons Beach, East Beach stretches along the coast of the island. East Beach is divided into several small beach sections, named after their access points.

The most popular public beach access points are Gould’s Inlet, the U.S. Coast Guard Station, Massengale Park and Pier Village, but with more than 40 public beach access points, there are plenty of opportunities for surfing and sunbathing wherever you are on the island.

The sand on the beach is hard, so make sure you bring a comfortable beach chair. Of course this area is also ideal for cycling at low tide and for long walks. Other popular activities on St. John’s public beaches include Simons’ hobbies of kite surfing, sand sculpture making and shell hunting. This is a great place to visit if you love collecting shells and making shell crafts.

It also has an award-winning golf course overlooking the salt marshes. We stayed in one of the rooms in the cottage with a terrace overlooking the beach (I took the picture above for our room). We loved it and we definitely plan on coming back!

Stores and restaurants in Pierce Village

Pier Village is the best place to eat and shop in St. Louis. Simons Island. As the center of the island, it offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, activities and attractions. Most of the Pier Village offers breathtaking views of the ocean and St. John’s. Simons Sound and Jekyll Island. Sights in the area include the St. John’s Lighthouse. Simons and Neptune Park.

Our offer ? Dine at one of the restaurants on St. John’s Island. Simons, and then take a night walk around the city. There are many local shops where you can find beach decorations and gifts. I found a beautiful old wooden hanging lamp and rope for Caroline’s room in the souvenir shop in the village.

Stop by Coastal Kitchen or Blue Water Cafe for a casual dinner (especially if you like oysters or shrimp), or try Iguana’s in the casual bar and grill for delicious fried shrimp and scallops and occasional live entertainment. And the Crab Trap, a popular island tradition for local seafood, is known for its tables with a hole in the middle for oyster shells and crab tails.

Before or after dinner, take a stroll along the St. John’s Island pier. Enjoy the beautiful view of St. Simons Strait. Simons. If you are lucky, you may see North Atlantic whales or dolphins.

Discover the history of the island

History buffs love to visit Fort Frederick National Monument. This fort and town were built in 1736 to protect the British colony from Spanish raids and were the scene of battles at Bloody Marsh and Gully Hole Creek. Today, the National Park Service protects the archaeological remains and the public can visit them for free.

With its towering oaks and Spanish moss-covered pecan trees, Fort Frederick Park exudes southern charm. This family and pet-friendly resort also offers ranger-led tours and a variety of educational programs. The Visitor Center offers a short introductory film and a variety of exhibits to help you begin your historical adventure.

Other historic sites include Christ Church, one of the most photographed places on the island. It was built in 1820, but was partially destroyed by Allied troops during the Civil War. It was rebuilt in 1884 with beautiful stained glass windows and is now used for tours and church services.

St. Simon Lighthouse Climb

Another historic landmark is the St. John’s Lighthouse and Warehouse. Simons. It is easily accessible from the south side of Pierce Village and also houses the A.W. Jones Heritage Center and the archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society.

St. John’s Lighthouse, built in 1872, is the largest of its kind in the world. Simons is one of five remaining towers in Georgia and still serves as an active aid to ships in the area. Visitors can climb the tower to enjoy panoramic views of the Georgia coastline from the top of the lighthouse. The view on the south side of St. John’s is very good. Simons Island, Jekyll Island and Brunswick are spectacular!

And before you leave, don’t forget to visit the lighthouse keeper’s house in Saint-Simon! Here you will find the Lighthouse Museum, as well as a variety of artifacts, historic rooms, and fun interactive exhibits. All this to help you discover what the life of a lighthouse keeper was really like.

Resting at Gascoigne Bluff

On the west side of St. John’s On St Simons Island, you’ll find Gascoyne Bluff. Gascoigne Bluff has had several uses throughout its history. Gascoigne Bluff is free to enter year-round and hosts many community events, including the Georgia Sea Island Festival. Historic attractions include the Cassin Garden Club slave cabins and the second largest red cedar in southern Georgia.

Gascoigne Bluff is also a great place to spend a fun evening in the park for the whole family. There is a public fishing pier, floating dock, picnic tables and pavilion, barbecues, disc golf course, gym and restrooms. It is the perfect place for a family picnic or an outdoor barbecue!
