The Piazza della Signoria is famous for the Neptune fountain that stands there. The fountain was inaugurated in 1559 and took almost 300 years to complete after being damaged by bombing at the time.
Originally the fountain was used for washing dishes and laundry and was a central place for the sale of goods.
No one ever thought the fountain would become a fountain. The upper part is made of stone and the lower part of marble.
